Chevrolet 5.3 Reliability?

So I was looking earlier at a 2000 Silverado extended cab with the 5.3 motor but it has 201k miles. I know a lot of guys make badass motors out of the 5.3 but I was wondering just exactly how reliable are the 5.3 chevy vortec motors in stock form? Anything I should look out for in particular ? Any info would be greatly appreciated thank you.

The one in my work truck has 175,000mi on it and has never had a thing done to it except regular oil changes. Runs perfectly.

The intake manifold and gaskets are known issues. You'll get a few lean bank codes. The intake manifold is plastic and when over torqued, cracks really easy. The intake gaskets, if they are original probably need to be replaced because they were a bad design. A newer, updated version has come out. When you go to put it back together use the torque chart and you shouldn't have an issue.

Probably a valid point, mine is a 2006 and has no such issues.

A friend is over 300k now on his 01 1500 z71. It's like anything if you dont beat the hell out of it they will last.

I see ill just give it a good inspection and listen to funny noises. The guy said sometimes a 2nd turn of the key has to be given, claimed its an ignition problem but it always starts wonder what that could be. It looks like a good truck just the miles are scaring me a little.

If it turns over but won't start the first time and you have to recycle the key sounds like a fuel pump or the fuel filters need to be done. If you have to cycle the key to get it to turn over then possibly the ignition or some eletrical. I'm pretty sure those keys have the chip. On the 08 up you can program new keys with the cluster and a gas pedal/ignition cycle. Idk about those. I had an 04 5.3 was an awesome truck. Had a posi with 410s, programmer, torsion keys, and was sitting on 35s. It was a regular cab short bed and man it would light them up with little ease. Almost took out a few light poles getting on it on wet pavement even with 35s. One of the fastest gas trucks I've ever driven

Never had an issue with my '04 Z71. Sold it with 140k almost 2 years ago, new owner still drives it everyday. If it wasn't red I probably would've kept it.

They are great motors. One of my dads company trucks had over 580,000 miles on the original motor with regular oil changes. Several of them with over 250k and still running great.

Fuel pressure regulators are known to go bad on these trucks and will cause a hard start. After its running, shut it off and pull the vacuum line off of the regulator (above drivers side valve cover). If gas leaks out of the vacuum line thats your problem. Its a quick easy fix.

Some of them burn a little oil but that is common. My 04 had close to 230k miles when I sold it and I beat on that truck all the time, just changed oil every 3-5k miles. My mom and stepdad use it as a ranch truck now and it has over 260k miles and still runs like a champ. When I was working out of town the truck would set for up to 8 months without getting touched.
