On my 02 ws6 I can hear a winding sound right under me! It sounds like it comes from where my tranny and drive shaft meets! Last night it started sounding like metal dragging and when I shift I let out the clutch and it bangs pretty loud! It goes in and out of gear good! It makes the winding and dragging sound even when in out of gear just coasting! If anyone might have an idea what it might be or where I should start please let me know. Thanks a lot!

could be a lot of things. look under the car to see if anything is abnormally hanging or loose. you put a new pilot bearing when you last replaced the clutch?

+1 On my 84' I had the same noise, clunking/whining/crunching, coming from right underneath my shifter. Sounded like it was definitely the tranny. I didn't even think twice about the rear end, so I pulled the tranny found nothing wrong, did a basic rebuild anyways while I had it out, threw her back in and same effing noise. The rear end was trashed. Because the vibrations and since the rear is connected to the tranny through the driveshaft, it sounded like the tranny.

Jack the rear up, put her in neutral and spin the rear tires by hand. Go back and forth with it and listen for the noise you heard in the car.

The T56 is the sledgehammer of the two tranny's offered. 9" inch for sure. Do it once. Do it right!!! But look to spend a couple grand.

And like slomaro said. Jack it up. Turn the wheels by hand if they lock up or making popping noises. Its the rear. We can look at her this weekend if you want.
